Jack the laugher

We certainly hope there will be lots of laughing in the Horch house as our kids grow up. Jack showed us last night that he will be willing to do his part. Yesterday evening Anne was playing with him and and she was really causing him to laugh. We’ve seen him smile and make sounds when he is happy but this was the first time there was a distinct laugh coming from our boy. It was pretty fun to watch.

I think Anne will be making him laugh for many years to come.

16 pounds plus

I jumped on the scale this afternoon with Jack and we reached a new weight. Our son now weighs 16 and a half pounds! Who knew you can gain so much weight on a milk-only diet?

The new world of rolling

Jack has now been a roller for about 2 weeks. This has been a good and bad development. The good part is that he is developing the ability to roll from his back to his stomach (and occasionally back to his starting position). This gives him a fun new trick to work on. The bad part is now he tends to roll at night sometimes getting himself stuck in some weird position which creates a lot of crying. I took these pictures showing the evolution of Jack rolling. He rolls so quickly now I was only able to take a few pics.

First time in the nursery

Mark the date down: July 26, 2009. Today was the first day Jack went to the church nursery. This was a nervous moment for Anne. Would she be abandoning her boy? What if he started to cry? Who would comfort him?

Anne checked him in the nursery with two trusted friends, Whitney and Chanda (both moms of multiple kids). And as it turns out, we had nothing to worry about. Jack was great and didn’t cry once.

The picture shows that Jack was officially a part of the nursery as he proudly wears a “Wamba Land” name tag.

Four on a couch

I have written numerous times about the small group we were a part of in which all four couples got pregnant within six months. Here is a picture of all of those kids. Can you spot Jack?

Happy 3-month Birthday, Jack!

Today Jack turned 3-months old! They say that a lot of things happen between 3-6 months and so we are excited to be at the beginning of this new stage.

He is already rolling over (I will write about this more in a future post), doing a lot of smiling and talking up a storm. We can’t understand his words but he is definitely making lots of fun sounds.

Jack made a card for his neighborhood friend who was born on the same day as him and we walked it over to their house. His friend Henry wasn’t home but we gave the card and homemade cookies to his dad.

Jack has had a really good day on his 3-month birthday. The next big one is 6-months. It will be here before we know it.

Good Sleep

Both Anne and Jack had some of their best sleep yet. Jack went to sleep around 9:15 pm and slept until 5:55 am. Then slept again until 8:20am when dad got him up. Anne went to bed around 9:45 pm and slept until Jack woke her up around 5:55 pm and then slept again until 8:30 am.

She said it was the most sleep she has had for about 4 months. She described it as an early Christmas present. Both mom and son are well rested on this Monday morning.

Jack finally takes bottle!

Breaking news from the Horch household: Jack drinks from bottle!

One of our biggest struggles is that Jack has yet to take a bottle. He would strongly resist anytime we offered. This made nights difficult. Going to church or out a challenge.

So if we could get the bottle thing down it would radically change our schedule and the things we can do. It will also allow Anne to sleep longer which would be wonderful. Let’s hope he keeps taking bottles!

12 weeks

Today marks 12 weeks for young Jack. In one week, he will officially celebrate 3-months. I have been looking forward to this birthday because 3-months seems like a good age. He is out of that newborn stage and moving into being a full-grown baby in which we should hopefully begin to see things like turning over by himself and sleeping through the night on a consistent basis.

As I mentioned earlier, there is another baby boy in our neighborhood born on the same day as Jack. We need to get those two together and have a three-month celebration. If we have a little party, I will definitely put up some pictures.

Third day update

In my last post I said Jack was going for three days in a row of not having an extended fussy time. This evening around 8:40ish he did begin an extended time of really crying. But in Jack’s defense he didn’t eat very well at his 8pm feeding and we think he was just telling us, “I’m still hungry.”

Anne fed him again and he seems to be doing much better. He is currently asleep in his crib.

We are going to go ahead and declare it a “good day.” Now let’s go for a fourth!

Good sleep

Last night Jack (and Anne) got some good sleep. We put Jack to bed around 9:15pm and he slept until 5:30 this morning. Anne fed him and then he slept some more until 8:00am. He has had two “good days” in a row. We define good days by his mood. It’s a good day if he doesn’t have an extended time of fussiness. Not the 10 to 15 minutes of fussiness but multiple hours of crankiness. So today we are going for the rare third good day in a row. So far it is looking promising.
